David Briggs, the co-creator of Millionaire, began his career as a journalist at a local newspaper in Kent. This led him to London where he worked on a variety of magazines including a short stint on Car Magazine as a motoring journalist.
In 1973 David joined Capital Radio. As well as presenting, David started producing most of the children’s, current affairs and music programmes. He later became the voice of the Flying Eye. David’s career at Capital spanned 20 years, during which time he produced some of the station’s biggest shows including Kenny Everett and Chris Tarrant. As Executive Producer of Chris Tarrant’s hugely popular Breakfast Show, David devised the majority of the games and quizzes, including the All Day Breakfast Show, The Bong Game and Birthday Bonanza. His positions at Capital included Deputy Programme Director. David left Capital in 1993 to join GMTV where he worked in marketing and promotions.
After three years he left GMTV to concentrate on creating and devising quiz shows and linked up with Celador Productions to create Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? along with Steve Knight and Mike Whitehill in 1996. After the show's idea was rejected by ITV bosses, Celador boss Paul Smith suggested to keep pushing on with the format. The show eventually launched on ITV in September 1998 and became a runaway success. David produced 19 series of Millionaire.
David has continued to create and co-devise quiz shows and his credits include Winning Lines, Brainiest and The People Versus, all of which have enjoyed success.
