David Paterson, a South African PE teacher and gameshow contestant, appeared on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? and became its first winner. He appeared on the March 19, 2000 episode and was the first top prize winner on the South African version of the show and also the first top prize winner outside the United States. He won the top prize of one million rand. He had one lifeline at the million rand question, Ask the Audience, but didn't use it as he knew the answer before the choices came up.
