Doug Van Gundy, from Marlinton, West Virginia, was a contestant on season 1 of the U.S. version of the show on August 19th-20th, 1999. He walked away with $250,000, being the first American to do so. He was also the first contestant in Worldwide WWTBAM to use four lifelines in a single run (due to a bad question).
