Ingram Wilcox, a professional quiz player from Bath, Somerset born in 1944, was a contestant on series 20 of the UK version of the show on 16 & 23 September, 2006. He was the fifth UK contestant to legitimately win £1,000,000 and sixth million pound winner overall. He was the last million pound winner crowned by host Chris Tarrant.

Wilcox grew up in London, but lived in Bath for 30 years. He is a father of five and has worked in the civil service for most of his life, having previously worked in illustration of educational books. He is the son of the painter Leslie Arthur Wilcox and brother of photographer William Wilcox. Before his appearance on Millionaire, Ingram had appeared on numerous game shows such as Mastermind, Fifteen to One and Countdown. In 2007, Wilcox moved to the South of France where he currently resides with his wife.

Mastermind[]

In 1980, Wilcox reached the final of Mastermind, but came third  (out of four) with 27 points, beaten by Fred Housego who won with 33 points. Wilcox's specialist subject was "The Crusades 1095–1192" in both his heat and the final, while in the semi-final he chose "Mammals".

Countdown[]

Wilcox was seeded twelfth in the second series of Countdown in 1983, however was knocked out in the Last 16, losing 57-32 to eventual semi-finalist Maurice Packman.

Fifteen to One[]

Wilcox appeared on Fifteen to One in both 1995 and 1996, including two grand finals, and was a witness to an outtake where host William G. Stewart dropped his question cards whilst explaining the rules of the first round in 1995.

WWTBAM Run[]

In two appearances of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? (broadcast on 5 June 2004 and 11 June 2005) Wilcox reached the "Fastest Finger First" stage but did not progress any further.

On 23 September 2006, Wilcox became the fifth person to win the £1,000,000 jackpot on the show. When he reached the one million pound question, despite using all of his lifelines by the £32,000 question. His final question was "Which boxer was famous for striking the gong in the introduction to J. Arthur Rank films?" He correctly chose Bombardier Billy Wells to win the prize money.

Mulling the question over, Ingram took a quote from former U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, favoring either a "known known" (meaning he was sure he knew the answer) or a "known unknown" (meaning he was sure he had no idea). Neither was the case as this question was revealed, but Ingram eventually conclusively deduced that the answer was A: Bombardier Billy Wells. Following a commercial break, Chris announced that Ingram had won a million pounds.

  • Ingram Wilcox is the last contestant to answer correctly both the second-to-last and the last questions in the original run of the UK version of the show.
    • John Gallantry is the only contestant in the original run who played after Ingram Wilcox who saw the £500,000 question on 26 May 2007.
    • John Robinson became the first contestant since Ingram Wilcox to see a £1,000,000 question on 4 March 2019.
    • Donald Fear became the first contestant since Ingram Wilcox to win the top prize of £1,000,000 on 11 September 2020.
  • Wilcox appeared as a Fastest Finger Contestant during a 2004 show, but failed to make it into the Hot Seat. He appeared again on 11 June 2005, but he still failed to make it into the Hot Seat.
  • Prior to becoming a millionaire on this show, Ingram Wilcox appeared on many other quiz/game shows such as 'Fifteen to One' and 'Mastermind' where he made it to the Grand Final in 1980.
